Gaza, Palestine – The US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, expressed optimism about Hamas’ response to the US plan presented on Sunday evening to end the war in Gaza.
“Hamas has not yet had enough opportunity to study the proposal in depth,” Witkov said.
He also added, commenting on the meeting that brought together the Qatari Prime Minister and the head of Egyptian intelligence with representatives of Hamas, that the movement’s delegation confirmed its readiness to study the American plan “in good faith and to submit its response later”.
“This in itself is a very positive indicator from an organization that has not yet had the opportunity to fully study the plan,” he continued.
“We don’t want the war to continue.”
For his part, Hamas leader Taher al-Nunu explained on Tuesday that the movement will announce its position on the American plan when it reviews it.
He said: “We do not want the war to continue and we will study any proposal that does not conflict with the interests of the Palestinians”.
He also stressed that “the Palestinian people are not minors and do not accept any guardianship from abroad”.
He stressed that Hamas is ready to agree with the Palestinian Authority to form a national reconciliation government to administer Gaza and the West Bank.
In addition, he pointed out that “the resistance’s weapons are linked to the establishment of a Palestinian state.”
He also added that “the release of Israeli prisoners is linked to the end of the war and the withdrawal of the occupation from Gaza.”
He stressed that the movement is serious about releasing prisoners as part of an agreement that ends the war on Gaza and guarantees Israel’s withdrawal from the Strip.
He concluded by stressing that Hamas is “ready for a truce that will last for years, while accepting Egypt’s proposal to form an independent administration for Gaza.”
Arab and Islamic welcome
These statements came after several Arab and Islamic countries announced their welcome of the plan and the “sincere efforts of the US President to end the war in Gaza.”
She affirmed her confidence in his ability to find a path to peace.
In turn, the Palestinian Authority on Monday welcomed Trump’s efforts to stop the war in the Gaza Strip, after two years of conflict.
20 items
The aforementioned plan included 20 items, the most prominent of which was that “the Palestinian Strip would be demilitarized and governed by an administrative committee that runs Gaza, composed of Palestinian technocratic figures, with international experts, without any role for Hamas”.
This committee will also be under the supervision and oversight of a new international transitional body called the “Peace Committee”, led and chaired by Trump.
In addition to other members and heads of state who will be announced later, including former British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
This body will establish the framework and manage funding for Gaza’s reconstruction until the Palestinian Authority completes its reform program, as outlined in various proposals.
Including Trump’s 2020 peace plan and the Saudi-French proposal, it enables the safe and effective restoration of control over Gaza.
