Tehran, Iran – Iran on Sunday denounced the re-imposition of UN sanctions on it over its nuclear program, describing them as “unjustified”.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in a statement, “Reactivating canceled decisions is a clear abuse of the legal process”.

“Any attempt to do so is null and void,” she added.

Iran pledged that it would take a “firm and appropriate response”.

This comes just hours after the re-imposition of UN sanctions related to its nuclear program. These sanctions were lifted ten years ago.

The Iranian Foreign Ministry announced in a statement that the Islamic Republic of Iran will firmly defend its national rights and interests.

It will also respond firmly and appropriately to any action aimed at harming the interests and rights of its people.

In addition, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi, earlier on Sunday, called on United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres. He urged him to prevent the activation of the mechanism for implementing the sanctions that were re-imposed on Tehran.

“We urge you to prevent any attempt to reactivate sanctions mechanisms, including the Sanctions Committee and the Panel of Experts,” Araqchi wrote in a letter to Guterres, posted on the X platform.

He added that Tehran will not recognize any attempt to extend, reactivate or impose UN sanctions.

On Sunday morning, a series of UN sanctions were reimposed on Iran over its nuclear program. These had previously been lifted under the 2015 agreement.

Sanctions were imposed again after Britain, France and Germany – known as the Troika countries – activated the “trigger mechanism” included in the agreement.

These countries accused Tehran of not fulfilling its obligations.
