Damascus, Syria – A Syrian judge issued an arrest warrant in absentia against former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, on charges related to the 2011 Daraa events.
On Saturday, the Syrian News Agency (SANA) quoted the seventh investigating judge in Damascus, Tawfiq Al-Ali, as saying, “The arrest warrant against the defunct regime includes charges of premeditated murder, torture leading to death, and deprivation of liberty”.
He added that the judicial decision opens the door to circulating the memorandum through Interpol and following up on the case internationally.
He pointed out that “this measure comes based on a lawsuit filed by the families of the victims of the Daraa events that took place on November 23, 2011.”
