Madrid, Spain – Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares stressed that countries recognizing Palestine must work to make it a full UN member within one year. He called for sanctions and a freeze on transactions with Israel until it halts its war on the Gaza Strip.
Albares noted that the wave of recognition of Palestine represents an important moment for humanity. He emphasized that the killing of thousands of innocent Palestinians constitutes a daily violation of international norms and humanitarian law.
He stressed the need to support the Palestinian people’s right to establish an independent, viable state in Gaza and the West Bank. He also rejected any illegal annexation of the West Bank. He explained that his government had imposed a complete arms embargo on Israel. Additionally, they imposed trade restrictions on illegal settlements.
Albares called on EU countries to sever trade ties with Israel. He also called for banning the entry of officials who have publicly called for the genocide of Palestinians. Additionally, those who seek the destruction of the two-state solution should be banned. He announced that his country would reduce consular assistance to citizens residing in illegal settlements. Moreover, he called on Europe to impose a comprehensive trade embargo on Israel.
Regarding the international Steadfastness Flotilla sailing to break the Israeli blockade of Gaza, Albares said it is civilian and peaceful. It has the support of 60 countries. He warned Israel against any attempt to harm it, stressing that any attack would expose those responsible to international courts.
