NEW YORK, USA – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, during his meeting with his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez, on the sidelines of the high-level week of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly, stressed the need to immediately end the economic and financial blockade imposed by the United States on Cuba.
Lavrov emphasized that the continuation of US sanctions constitutes an obstacle to Cuba’s economic and social development. These sanctions also undermine the country’s efforts to address domestic and international challenges. He added that Moscow affirms its firm position on supporting Cuba’s sovereign rights and lifting trade and financial sanctions imposed on it. This includes removing the country from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.
For his part, the Cuban Foreign Minister expressed his country’s gratitude to Moscow for its supportive stance. He emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral cooperation in the political, economic, and trade fields, which would contribute to achieving sustainable development for both countries.
During the meeting, the two ministers also stressed the importance of maintaining an active political dialogue and expanding multidimensional cooperation, including in the areas of energy, infrastructure, education, science, and technology. The joint statement noted the convergence of Russia and Cuba’s views on many global and regional issues. The statement also affirmed joint work within the United Nations and the BRICS group to promote stability and development.
