Copenhagen, Denmark – Danish Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen said Thursday that the drone flights that caused local airports to close twice this week are a systematic operation carried out by a “professional party”.
He explained during a press conference: “There is no doubt that everything indicates that this is the work of a professional party, especially when we are talking about a systematic process like this in several locations almost simultaneously”. This is what I define as a compound attack with different types of weapons.
In turn, Justice Minister Peter Homelgaard confirmed Copenhagen’s intention to enhance its ability to “monitor” and “neutralize” drones.
Danish police announced on Thursday that drones flew over a number of the country’s airports, causing one of them to be closed for hours.
This comes after a similar incident this week led to the closure of Copenhagen Airport.
This comes two days after Denmark condemned an “attack” on its infrastructure after drones of unknown origin flew over the capital’s airport.
This week’s incidents followed similar incidents in Poland and Romania, and Russian fighter jets violating Estonian airspace.
This exacerbates tensions in light of the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine.
The drones were spotted in Denmark over Aalborg (north), Esbjerg (west), Sønderborg and Skridstrup airfields in the south, before leaving these locations.
Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced on Tuesday that the drones that caused the closure of Copenhagen Airport represented the “most serious attack” on the country’s vital infrastructure.
She added that what happened on Monday night was “the most serious attack on vital Danish infrastructure to date”.
She noted that it is consistent with the recent trend of “other drone attacks, airspace breaches and hacking attacks targeting European airports”.
