Cairo, Egypt – The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced today the suspension of its humanitarian operations in Houthi-controlled areas. This decision came after several of its employees were detained. The WFP emphasized that this measure was taken to protect the safety of its staff. Moreover, it affirmed its continued efforts to support civilians outside conflict zones wherever possible.

The humanitarian crisis in Yemen is worsening.

This comment comes amid escalating humanitarian tensions in Yemen, with severe shortages of food and medicine. This is exacerbating the suffering of the civilian population, especially in remote and deprived areas.

International efforts to find an urgent solution

The program indicated that it is working with international and local parties. They aim to find an urgent solution to release employees and resume vital operations.

Warnings of an imminent disaster

UN experts warn that the continued suspension of food aid could exacerbate the humanitarian crisis. It could also increase malnutrition rates among children and the elderly. Experts stress that cooperation between all parties is crucial to avoid a greater humanitarian catastrophe.
