MOSCOW, Russia – The Kremlin said Monday that Russia still believes a two-state solution is the only way to resolve the conflict in the Middle East.
This was in response to a question about the decision of some Western countries to recognize a Palestinian state.
Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “We remain committed to the basic resolutions of the United Nations Security Council, and we remain committed to the international position on the possibility of resolving the Palestinian-Israeli conflict on the basis of the two-state solution”.
He added: “This remains our approach, and we believe it is the only possible way to find a solution to this long-term and very complex conflict, which is now perhaps going through its most acute and tragic stages”.
On Sunday, Britain, Canada, Australia and Portugal recognized a Palestinian state.
In a move aimed at strengthening the two-state solution, which sparked an angry reaction from Israel.
This brings the number of countries that recognize the State of Palestine to 145 out of 193 member states of the United Nations.
Other countries will recognize Palestine
France, along with 10 other countries, is preparing to officially recognize the State of Palestine to exert more pressure on Israel.
During Monday’s summit at the United Nations headquarters in New York, the war in the Gaza Strip will dominate.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Sunday that the Palestinians “want a homeland, they want a state and we must not push them towards Hamas”. If we do not provide them with a political perspective and this recognition (…) They will comment with Hamas as the only solution.”
He added: “If we want to isolate Hamas, the recognition process and the accompanying peace plan constitute a precondition”.
Other countries are expected to join France on Monday, including Andorra, Belgium, Luxembourg, Malta and San Marino.
These announcements come at a time when the Israeli army is intensifying its bombing of Gaza.
With increasing pressure on Israel due to the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the besieged and destroyed Palestinian Strip.
