Berlin, Germany – By promoting the profession through a computer game.. The German Foreign Intelligence Agency (BND) seeks to attract young cadres to work as spies.
The story began at Gamescom in Cologne, the largest international exhibition of computer games.
The agency presented a game entitled “Legends of German Intelligence.. Operation Black Box, which visitors can experience in the CIA pavilion at the exhibition.
The game revolves around a fictional rogue state called “Petolan” that has developed a harmful program. It sends a player to this state as a spy seeking to obtain secret information and avoid an imminent disaster.
Using a game player, the game’s heroine is guided through an enemy military complex. Among other things, she must dodge reconnaissance drones.
Focus.. And a strong memory
Playing the game requires high concentration and a strong memory. For example, you must memorize the digital code to lock a door so that it can be opened later.
The game’s heroine is supported in her adventure by an electronic hacker and a geographer.
According to the German intelligence agency, the game gives players an impression of working for the agency.
The game.. Forbidden at home
It should be noted that the game is not available for practice from home yet.
But this may be possible in the future, according to the agency. According to its data, it plans to make the game available on the platform “in the near future”.
The agency’s spokeswoman, Julia Lehner, said that the German intelligence agency, like any other employer, is looking for skilled employees.
She added that her booth at Gamescom and the game presented at the booth are “an effective tool to achieve this purpose.”
“There are similarities between the people we want to include in our ranks and the visitors to Gamescom: both are tech-savvy, and enjoy navigating roles, assuming different identities, embarking on missions, and uncovering connections,” she said.
The agency employs 6,500 people. This includes about 4,000 at its headquarters in Berlin, 1,000 in Bülach, and 1,500 in other locations inside and outside Germany.
“Saying you can’t apply to work for Germany’s foreign intelligence agency is a myth,” Lehner said. “You can be hired.”
