Washington, United States – Calling for a lasting peace, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stressed upon his arrival in Washington on Sunday evening. He came for talks with his American counterpart Donald Trump. Zelenskyy emphasized that all parties want a quick end to the war.
“We all share a strong desire to end this war quickly and reliably,” Zelensky wrote on social media.
He explained: “I am grateful to the President of the United States for the invitation. We all equally want to end this war quickly and reliably.”
He added: “I hope that our joint strength with America and with our European friends will force Russia to achieve true peace”.
Zelensky is scheduled to meet with Trump on Monday, along with a group of European leaders.
What does Trump think?
The US President confirmed that his Ukrainian counterpart is capable of ending the war with Russia “immediately”.
On the other hand, he ruled out Ukraine regaining Crimea or joining NATO.
Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform on the eve of his scheduled meeting at the White House. He noted that Ukrainian President Zelensky can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to. Alternatively, he can continue fighting.
He added: “There is no restoration of Crimea that Obama granted (12 years ago without firing a single shot) and no accession of Ukraine to NATO”.
Trump and Zelensky are expected to meet on Monday at the White House to discuss ways to end the war. The conflict has been raging since February 2022.
This meeting will be attended by a number of European leaders. These include French President Emmanuel Macron, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. Also attending are Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, and the NATO Secretary General, among other figures.
