Dubai, United Arab Emirates – The Financial Times reported that France, Germany and Britain informed the United Nations of their readiness to reimpose sanctions on Iran. However, this would occur if Tehran does not return to negotiations regarding its nuclear program.
The report added, citing a letter seen by the newspaper, that the foreign ministers of the so-called “European Troika” group wrote to the United Nations on Tuesday. They indicated the possibility of “re-imposing sanctions.” This would happen unless Iran takes action to resume negotiations.
“We have made clear that if Iran is not prepared to reach a diplomatic solution before the end of August 2025, or does not seize the opportunity of an extension, the G3 is prepared to activate the mechanism for reimposing sanctions,” the ministers said in the letter.
The European Troika’s warning comes after talks with Iran in Istanbul last month. It was the first direct meeting since Israeli and US strikes on Iranian nuclear sites.
The Financial Times revealed late last month that the Europeans are ready to give Iran a “limited extension” of the time limit. Before activating the “trigger mechanism,” Tehran must accept specific conditions related to uranium enrichment. These conditions also relate to the transparency of nuclear facilities.
In this context, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that his country had clarified its “principled” positions. He noted that consultations with the Europeans would continue without making tangible concessions.
While the Director of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, called on Iran to be “fully transparent,” he expressed optimism about the return of international inspectors to Iranian nuclear sites later this year. He stressed “the necessity of restoring normal relations with Iran” in accordance with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. This aims to ensure compliance and transparency.
