Long borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan
Sistan-Baluchestan Province is located about 1,200 kilometers southeast of the capital, Tehran, and shares long borders with Pakistan and Afghanistan.
The region witnesses frequent clashes between Iranian security forces, including the Iranian Revolutionary Guard. Rebels from the Baloch minority and other groups are also involved, in addition to drug smugglers.
On July 26, gunmen stormed a courthouse in the provincial capital, Zahedan, killing at least six people. This attack was later claimed by the Army of Justice.
In one of the deadliest attacks in the province, 10 police officers were killed last October. Authorities also described it as a “terrorist” attack.
