Moscow, Russia – The Kremlin called on Monday for “extreme caution” regarding nuclear threats, following US President Donald Trump’s order to deploy two nuclear submarines on Friday, in response to statements by Russian Security Council Vice President Dmitry Medvedev.
Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters: “It is clear that American submarines are already on a combat mission and it is an ongoing operation.. “These submarines are constantly on duty regardless of Trump’s statements,” he added. “We believe everyone should be very careful in their statements on nuclear issues.”
On the other hand, Peskov revealed that: “American mediation efforts regarding the war in Ukraine are very important,” noting that Russian President Vladimir Putin may meet with US envoy Steve Witkov this week.
“We are always happy to see Mr. Witkov in Moscow,” he explained. We are always happy to communicate with him, and we consider him important, meaningful and very useful.
US President Donald Trump announced in a tweet on his Truth Social account on Friday that he had ordered “the deployment of two nuclear submarines in appropriate areas,” in response to Dmitry Medvedev’s statements.
Trump wrote: “Based on the highly provocative statements made by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is currently Vice Chairman of Russia’s National Security Council, I have issued orders to station two nuclear submarines in the appropriate areas, in anticipation that these reckless and seditious statements may be more than just words”.
Medvedev had said that US President Donald Trump must remember that Russia is not Israel or Iran and the language of “alarms” represents a step towards war. Commenting on Trump’s statement regarding the deadline for reaching a ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine, Medvedev continued, saying that this is “a step towards war”.
