Athens, Greece – The death of the Greek philosopher Chrysippus remains one of the strangest stories associated
with a philosophical figure in history, with ancient accounts claiming he died after a fit of uncontrollable laughter.

Chrysippus was one of the most prominent philosophers of the Stoic school in the third century BC.

He contributed significantly to the development of Stoic thought in the areas of logic, ethics,

and philosophy, becoming one of its most important theorists.

Chrysippus and a fit of uncontrollable laughter

The most popular story relates that Chrysippus saw a donkey eating figs

and asked his servant to give the animal a little wine to help it swallow.

When the philosopher imagined the scene, he burst into uncontrollable laughter.

Afterward, his condition worsened, and he died, according to some ancient historical accounts.

Tales of unusual endings

Despite the story’s fame, its details remain a subject of debate, and there is no conclusive evidence

to prove that laughter was the direct cause of Chrysippus death.

Other accounts point to different reasons for his demise.

More than two thousand years later, the Greek philosopher remains a prominent figure

in the history of philosophy as one of the leading figures of the Stoic school.

Moreover, the strange story of his death has linked his name to one of the most famous tales of unusual endings in history.
