Dubai, United Arab Emirates – Academy Award-winning American actress Diane Keaton has died at the age of 79.
Diane Keaton captured hearts with her performance as Woody Allen’s eccentric girlfriend in the 1977 romantic comedy “Annie Hall”.
Rizzoli, a publishing company that has published several of Keaton’s books, confirmed her death in a statement.
She also described her as “an icon whose influence extended to cinema, fashion and design”.
A representative for Keaton could not be reached yet. People magazine was the first to announce the news of her death.
Keaton, who has appeared in more than 60 films, including the “The Godfather” trilogy, “The First Wives Club” and 8 films with Woody Allen, distinguished herself in Hollywood. Her personal style, which was characterized by feminine looks, turtleneck jackets and distinctive hats, set her apart.
She was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her portrayal of American journalist Louise Bryant in the political drama “Reds” in 1981. She was also nominated as a caring aunt to Leonardo DiCaprio in the family film “Marvin’s Room” in 1996. Furthermore, she was recognized opposite Jack Nicholson in the romantic comedy film “Something You Should Give” (Something Gotha Giff) in 2003.
“Perfect version”
But it was Annie Hall, in which Allen based his relationship with Keaton, that was credited with her emergence as an experienced actress.
Keaton said about the film in an interview with C.B.S News in 2004 “He was a perfect version of me, let’s put it that way”.
Keaton was also a director, writer, producer, and photographer, and had a passion for restoring California homes.
She recounted the details of her life in two books of her memoirs, “Then Again”, in 2011.
In which she revealed that she suffered from bulimia nervosa (bulimia) in her twenties.

Keaton was born in Los Angeles on January 5, 1946, the eldest of four children.
She bore the name Diane Hall and then bore her mother’s surname before marriage. This was to avoid confusion with another actress with the same surname.
