Abu Dhabi, UAE – The members of the UN Security Council condemned in the strongest terms the drone attack targeting a power generator outside the perimeter of the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant in the Al Dhafra region of the United Arab Emirates.
In an official statement issued last night, the Council affirmed that this attack constitutes a flagrant violation of international law. It also noted that the attack poses grave risks to civilian lives, the safety of infrastructure, and the environment.
The members of the Council expressed their deep concern regarding this dangerous escalation, demanding an immediate and permanent cessation of all attacks targeting civilians and civilian infrastructure in the UAE. They also emphasized the inviolability of peaceful nuclear facilities.
The Council based its position on its previous resolutions and those of the IAEA General Conference. They further reaffirmed that any military activity that threatens nuclear safety is internationally unacceptable.
The Council also welcomed the statement by the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), who expressed similar concerns. It emphasized the need for states to adhere to the highest standards of nuclear safety and security.
Members were reminded that the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant operates in accordance with the highest international standards and is subject to rigorous auditing and oversight by the UAE Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), in compliance with IAEA standards.
In closing, the members of the Security Council reaffirmed their full commitment to supporting peace and stability in the Middle East region. They also emphasized their strong support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the United Arab Emirates, in accordance with the principles and Charter of the United Nations, which guarantee the protection of states from any acts of aggression that threaten their security and stability.
