Damascus, Syria – An attack by a group of protesters on the United Arab Emirates embassy in Damascus has sparked widespread international condemnation. The protesters tore down the Emirati flag and pelted the embassy building with stones. This incident constitutes a blatant violation of international obligations to protect diplomatic missions.
A video circulating in the media shows the protesters approaching the embassy building. Syrian security forces intervened to contain the situation and secure the area.
The Syrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs affirmed its categorical rejection of any attack on or attempt to storm embassies and diplomatic missions accredited to the country. It emphasized that these sites are protected under international law and the Vienna Conventions. The Ministry added that any actions that violate the sanctity of diplomatic missions contravene the principles of mutual respect and international cooperation.
The incident was widely condemned by international bodies. These bodies considered such actions a violation of international law and a threat to the stability of diplomatic relations in the region. Furthermore, they emphasized the need to protect diplomatic missions and shield them from any escalation or targeting.
This comes at a time when the region is witnessing a wave of political tensions and protest movements. However, experts point out that using public spaces for such acts against diplomatic missions could open the door to broader diplomatic repercussions. This could happen if the situation is not quickly contained by the relevant authorities.
