Security escalation in Iraq
Since the outbreak of the Israeli-American-Iranian conflict, Iranian-backed Iraqi factions have claimed responsibility for attacks targeting several American bases in Iraq and the region. As a result, this has raised concerns among Gulf states and neighboring countries regarding security and stability.
Jordan’s position
The Jordanian Foreign Minister stressed the need to prevent armed groups from targeting the Kingdom. He affirmed his country’s commitment to maintaining the security and safety of its citizens. He also called for regional cooperation to confront any future threats.
The aim of the Gulf States statement
The statement aims to emphasize the need to stabilize the security situation in Iraq. It also aims to prevent its territory from being used as a launching pad for attacks against neighboring countries. Besides this, it reflects the desire of the Gulf states and Jordan to avoid military escalation and tensions that could affect the stability of the region.
Regional context
The Gulf states’ calls come at a time of escalating military operations in the region. Meanwhile, diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions are intensifying. Despite these tensions, Saudi oil flows through the Red Sea continue to increase. This reflects sustained economic activity despite the security challenges.
