Tel Aviv, Israel – Anwar Gargash, diplomatic advisor to the UAE president, said his country might participate in a US-led international effort to secure navigation in the Strait of Hormuz. He confirmed that talks are still ongoing and no formal agreement has yet been reached.
Moves to secure navigation
Gargash explained, during an online address organized by the Council on Foreign Relations, that securing the flow of trade and energy is a collective responsibility. This comes amid increasing challenges to navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most important strategic oil shipping lanes.
Fears of regional escalation
These statements come at a time of growing concern about the security of maritime routes. This is especially true after actions by Iran that have affected shipping in the Strait, prompting Washington to rally international support for escorting oil tankers and ensuring their safe passage.
Post-war arrangements
Gargash indicated that the next phase, following the conclusion of military operations related to the war on Iran, will require arrangements to ensure that Tehran does not use its nuclear, missile, or drone programs to threaten regional stability. He also emphasized the importance of joint international action to achieve this objective.
