Abu Dhabi, UAE – The Yas Clinic – Khalifa City team, in collaboration with the Abu Dhabi Stem Cell Centre, successfully performed an unrelated donor bone marrow transplant on a 55-year-old Emirati patient who was suffering from a blood disease and required this precise type of operation.
The operation came after it was not possible to find a compatible donor within the family.
This necessitated an international search of donor records around the world, which resulted in finding a 100% identical donor in the United States.
This was followed by careful medical and logistical coordination that included donor examinations, stem cell collection, and transportation to Abu Dhabi in a safe and rapid manner.
The stem cell transfer process took 30 to 60 minutes, in a manner similar to the transfer of blood products, and went smoothly.
The patient is currently undergoing follow-up in the bone marrow transplant unit, and is expected to be discharged within two weeks.
This achievement comes amid the global rise in cancer and blood disease rates.
It emphasizes the importance of providing advanced treatments within Abu Dhabi, and Abu Dhabi’s ability to provide advanced healthcare comparable to the best international centers.
Dr. Maysoun Al Karam, Executive Director of Medical Affairs at Yas Clinic, said that the success of a marrow transplant from an unrelated donor reflects the development of the healthcare system in Abu Dhabi, and requires high medical expertise and integrated coordination between medical and nursing teams and local and international partners.
She pointed out that this achievement allows patients to receive life-saving treatments within the emirate and in a supportive and safe environment.
