Cairo, Egypt – The Egyptian Public Prosecution announced that it has referred a number of defendants to criminal trial, accusing them of engaging in monopolistic practices in the white poultry market. This comes in violation of the provisions of the Law on the Protection of Competition and the Prevention of Monopolistic Practices.
Agreements to raise prices and reduce supply
Investigations revealed that the defendants entered into illegal agreements aimed at controlling the supply of white poultry. Furthermore, they conspired to artificially inflate prices, disrupting supply and demand mechanisms and negatively impacting consumers.
The prosecution clarified that these practices constitute a serious violation of free competition rules. They also distort the market and harm the national economy, especially since poultry is a staple commodity relied upon daily by citizens.
Protecting competition and regulating markets
The relevant authorities confirmed that referring the defendants to trial comes within the framework of the state’s efforts to regulate markets and confront any practices that harm competition or lead to price increases without legitimate economic justification.
The Public Prosecution stressed its continued monitoring of any violations related to monopolistic practices or price manipulation. It stated that it will take deterrent legal measures against violators to ensure consumer protection and support market stability.
The economic community is awaiting the outcome of the trial. There is widespread interest in the issue of poultry prices and its direct impact on food security in Egypt.
