Jeddah, Saudi Arabia – Al-Ahli Jeddah secured their qualification for the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League Elite, after achieving a decisive 1-0 victory over Al-Duhail in the round of 16.
Al-Ahli Jeddah dominated the first half, with Riyad Mahrez nearly making an early difference with dangerous crosses. Al-Duhail responded with a powerful free kick in the 24th minute that struck the post, and the first half ended goalless.
In the second half, both teams traded attacks, with Al-Ahli’s Galeno squandering a clear-cut chance, while the goalkeeper made a crucial save from Krzysztof Piatek’s dangerous attempt. The crossbar also denied the Saudi team a goal in the 88th minute, sending the match into extra time.
In extra time, Ivan Toni missed a penalty for Al Ahly. Then, Riyad Mahrez sealed the victory with a superb free-kick in the 117th minute, finding the top left corner of the net.
