Washington, United States – US Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced in an interview yesterday, Tuesday. He shared the United States’ intention to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization.

Rubio added in an interview with Sid and Friends in the Morning that his country is “in the process” of classifying the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist organization. He also noted that this is “in preparation.”

He continued, saying that the classification process is “long and complex, but work is underway”.

He pointed out that “it is clear that there are different branches of the Muslim Brotherhood.” Therefore, each branch must be identified.”

“We are constantly reviewing groups to classify them for what they are: supporters of terrorists, perhaps terrorists themselves, whatever that may be,” he explained. We haven’t done this in a long time. So, we have a lot to make up for.”

According to Rubio, the process “includes a careful review of each branch of the group separately. It also involves documenting evidence to ensure that the decision withstands judicial appeals”.

A bill to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group

The US Secretary of State considered that the Muslim Brotherhood raises “grave concern.”

Last month, Republican US Senator Ted Cruz submitted to Congress a bill to classify the Muslim Brotherhood as a terrorist group.

Cruz considered the Muslim Brotherhood to be a “terrorist organization” and “provides support to its terrorist branches, such as Hamas.”

According to Cruz, the Brotherhood “poses a serious threat to American national security interests”.

The Washington Free Beacon newspaper said that Cruz’s project is titled “The Muslim Brotherhood Designation as a Terrorist Organization Act of 2025.” It adopts what Cruz’s team described as a “modern strategy” based on targeting the group’s branches rather than focusing on its unspecified global structure.

According to a document distributed by Cruz’s office to senators, the bill gives the State Department new powers to classify branches linked to the Brotherhood as terrorist groups. It also requires the department to prepare a comprehensive list of these entities within 90 days of the law’s passage.

The proposed legislation includes three paths to classifying the Brotherhood as a terrorist organization. This is a measure by Congress under the Anti-Terrorism Act of 1987. Then comes an official classification by the State Department as a foreign terrorist organization. Finally, it is followed by the group’s inclusion on the global terrorism list.

Under these classifications, US citizens will be prohibited from conducting any financial transactions or providing services to the group. Additionally, its assets will be frozen.
