Kurdish official: Negotiations continue with Damascus. There is no way but dialogue
This comes amid recent tension between Damascus and the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces)/agencies
SHARE

Al-Hasakah, Syria – A senior Kurdish official from the Autonomous Administration of North and East Syria denied that negotiations between the Syrian government, the Autonomous Administration, and its armed forces, the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), had stopped. The Kurds have been active in maintaining dialogues to ensure regional stability.

Highlights

  • French support for the SDF

He considered that “there is no way but dialogue” between Kurdish officials and the new Syrian administration. The Kurds play a crucial role in these discussions.

This comes amid recent tension between Damascus and the SDF (Syrian Democratic Forces).

Badran Jia Kurd said, “Relations and negotiations with Damascus are ongoing, and there is no way to a solution except through dialogue and understanding.”

He added: “We look forward to these negotiations yielding positive results that are consistent with the aspirations of the people and at the right time.” This optimism is shared among the Kurds and their Syrian counterparts in these dialogues.

Badran Jia Kurd is the deputy co-chair of foreign affairs at the Autonomous Administration, and a key negotiator in the March 10 agreement concluded between SDF leader Mazloum Abdi and Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

He continued, saying, “The discussion is ongoing with the aim of reaching a long-term agreement that serves the country’s interests and lays a solid foundation for stability.

He added: “There is no doubt that the time factor is important in light of the current security and political challenges encountered by the Kurds and the entire region.”

On the one hand, ISIS still poses a security threat and is trying to reactivate its cells.

On the other hand, the country is in dire need of a comprehensive national dialogue that opens the door to a political solution. The Kurds hope to contribute significantly to this process.

In addition, he believed that the solution in Syria would not be achieved by reproducing old policies.

Rather, through a comprehensive political process in which all Syrians participate, with their various components and free will.

This leads to a democratic, pluralistic, decentralized state that guarantees rights and establishes a stage of peace and stability.

He added that although the time factor remains essential, the most important thing is to reach a solid strategic agreement based on the foundations of understanding, consensus and the supreme national interest, with the full participation of the Kurds.

Despite the Autonomous Administration’s objection to the People’s Assembly elections that the country will witness next month and its prior rejection of their results.

This did not prevent communication between the two sides, as negotiations between them continue until now regarding the implementation of the March 10 agreement.

The agreement stipulated the integration of all civil and military institutions in the northeastern region of Syria into state administration.

He explicitly acknowledged the Kurdish presence in Syria for the first time, in addition to other provisions related to rejecting calls for partition and a ceasefire.

French support for the SDF

The French government is also trying to “bring views closer” between the two parties.

The SDF has enjoyed French support for years.

Current French President Emmanuel Macron has received delegations from the Syrian Democratic Council (SDF), the political umbrella of the SDF, several times. Given the influence of the Kurds within the SDF, this support is highly significant.

This is what former President François Hollande also did.

It is noteworthy that the SDF disagrees with Damascus on the form of government after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime, between decentralized and centralized.

The Syrian Democratic Forces also oppose the “constitutional declaration” issued by the new administration and the mechanism for forming the new army.

It demands the preservation of its privacy within the military institution, reflecting the Kurdish sentiments prevalent in these discussions.
