Madrid, Spain – Morocco began their campaign under new coach Mohamed Wahbi with a 1-1 draw against Ecuador in a friendly match as both teams prepare for the 2026 World Cup.
The match took place on Friday evening at the Metropolitano Stadium in the Spanish capital, Madrid. Both sides displayed a balanced performance throughout the two halves.
Ecuador took the lead at the start of the second half, after John Yeboah scored the opening goal in the 48th minute, taking advantage of a state of confusion in the “Atlas Lions” defense.
Despite the Moroccan team’s attempts to come back, Nael El Aynaoui missed a penalty kick in the 62nd minute, before making up for it by scoring the equalizer in the 88th minute, giving his team a well-deserved point at the end of the match.
This is the first match for the Moroccan national team under the leadership of Mohamed Wahbi, who took over the technical duties at the beginning of March, succeeding Walid Regragui.
The Atlas Lions are expected to play another friendly match during the current international break, facing Paraguay in Lens, France.
It is worth noting that the Moroccan national team is in Group C of the World Cup finals, alongside Brazil, Scotland, and Haiti.
