Cairo, Egypt – Al Ahly of Egypt received official notification from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) regarding the sanctions issued by the Disciplinary Committee following the events of their match against FAR Rabat at the conclusion of the group stage of the CAF Champions League.
CAF sanctions against Al Ahly
The club explained in an official statement that the disciplinary committee decided to ban Al Ahly fans from attending two matches in African competitions. The second match ban is suspended.
The decision also included a $50,000 fine for the club, plus an additional $10,000 fine for the use of laser pointers during the match, stemming from the events that transpired.
Reason for the sanctions
The match between Al Ahly and FAR Rabat was marred by some Al Ahly fans throwing water bottles onto the pitch, causing the game to be stopped several times before the Moroccan club filed an official complaint with the Confederation of African Football (CAF).
As a result of these sanctions, Al Ahly will play the second leg against Esperance of Tunisia in the quarter-finals of the African Champions League without its fans in attendance.
The first leg between the two teams is scheduled to take place in Tunisia on March 15th, while the return leg will be played in Cairo on March 21st.
