Buenos Aires, Argentina – Argentine coach Marcelo Gallardo has announced his departure from River Plate, following the team’s poor results and three consecutive losses.
Gallardo revealed his decision via a video message broadcast by the club, confirming that the match against Banfield, scheduled for Thursday at the Monumental Stadium, will be his last as head coach, bidding farewell to the fans before the curtain falls on his second stint.
The Argentine coach said in his message: “This is a message to the River Plate fans. I will try to be brief so that emotions don’t overwhelm me. Thursday’s match will be my last”.
He added: “I have nothing but words of thanks to this great club and its fans for their unconditional support over the past years, even in difficult moments. It is clear that things did not go as planned”.
Gallardo’s return to lead the team in his second term faced significant challenges, unlike his first term, which lasted for about eight and a half years, during which he achieved 14 titles, including two Copa Libertadores titles.
In his second phase, which began on August 5, 2024 following the departure of Martin Demichelis, Gallardo failed to add any titles to the club’s trophy cabinet.
