Rabat, Morocco – Benin’s national team suffered a major blow ahead of their anticipated match against Egypt in the round of 16 of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, after team captain Steve Mounié was injured.
Benin’s national team is scheduled to meet its Egyptian counterpart next Monday, as part of the round of 16 of the continental tournament currently being held in Morocco.
The Benin national team released an official statement detailing Steve Mounié’s health condition. They explained that the “Panthers'” captain had recovered from the flu and returned to play in the group stage matches against Botswana and Senegal. However, his health has since deteriorated again.
The statement explained, “On the evening following the Senegal match, Steve Mounié’s temperature rose, and he felt generally unwell. As a result, he underwent a series of medical tests. His participation in the round of 16 match against Egypt is still uncertain.”
The Benin national team added that the participation of veteran left-back David Kiki is also in doubt. He suffered a calf injury during training.
Egypt qualified for the round of 16 after topping Group B, while Benin secured their place as one of the four best third-placed teams in the group stage.
