Cairo, Egypt – Alan Shearer, the former Newcastle striker and Premier League legend, revealed the reasons behind Mohamed Salah’s declining performance with Liverpool during the current 2025-2026 season.
Liverpool are currently eighth in the Premier League table with 18 points, eight points behind leaders Arsenal.
Alan Shearer told the British newspaper “Independent”: “I think they need to win every game from now until the end of the season. I don’t think that’s possible, so I think their title race has become difficult.”
He added, “There are a lot of problems on the defensive side; they have defensive problems all over the field.”
Regarding the reasons for Mohamed Salah’s decline, he said: “Mohamed Salah is not close to what he was last season. His current level is not normal, and I don’t know if Salah feels that or not.”
He added: “I don’t have a clear reason. Is it because of the money spent on Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak? Because of that, he felt he was no longer the number one player.”
He continued: “There is definitely something wrong. Whether it’s his advancing age and his inability to play like he used to, or whether he has something bothering him.”
He concluded: “But we are certainly not seeing the same level of Mohamed Salah that we saw. That can be said about most of Liverpool’s players, not just Salah.”
