Seoul, South Korea – US-based Nvidia and South Korean company SK are set to announce details of a new collaboration plan on Monday. This move reflects the growing trend of strategic partnerships in the semiconductor and artificial intelligence sectors, particularly amidst ongoing challenges related to the global memory chip supply. Furthermore, it comes at a time when Nvidia CEO Jensen Hwang has warned that the current memory chip shortage could persist for several years, underscoring the importance of collaboration between major players in this vital sector.

Joint announcement expected

SK Group Chairman Chi Tae-won and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang will give a joint media briefing on Monday morning to reveal details of the new cooperation plan, a SK Hynix spokesman said. In addition, the spokesman confirmed the validity of Korean media reports that spoke of ongoing arrangements for the official announcement of the partnership. But he did not reveal in advance the nature of the agreement or the areas that the cooperation would include.

The chip crisis is driving partnerships.

The anticipated announcement comes amid growing global demand for memory chips used in artificial intelligence, data centers, and advanced computing applications. This has placed continuous pressure on global supply chains. Jensen Huang recently indicated that the gap between demand and production in the memory chip market could persist for several years. Therefore, this situation is driving companies to strengthen cooperation and joint investments to ensure they can meet the growing needs of the market.

Strategic importance of the technology sector

Observers believe that any new collaboration between Nvidia and SK could significantly enhance the production capabilities of advanced chips used in artificial intelligence systems. This is especially relevant given the intensifying global competition in this field. SK Hynix is one of the world’s leading memory chip manufacturers, while Nvidia dominates the AI processor market. Therefore, any partnership between them would have a direct impact on the future of the global technology industry and the semiconductor market.
