Nicosia, Cyprus – Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides revealed that a high-level ministerial delegation will soon head to the United Arab Emirates to consolidate strategic cooperation encompassing vital sectors.
He stressed that his country is strengthening its position as a key gateway linking energy projects in the Middle East and the European Union.
Strategic partnership with the Emirates
President Christodoulides announced in an interview with the Cypriot newspaper “Vi News”
that a delegation including the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Energy, Agriculture,
and the Deputy Minister of Innovation
He will head to Abu Dhabi to finalize major agreements in the water
and energy sectors, with the official signing expected in early 2026.
In the water sector, the Cypriot president praised the immediate Emirati support
that provided Cyprus with water desalination units at no cost.
This is to meet the challenges of 2025, noting that future cooperation will
include comprehensive management of the desalination sector.
In the energy sector, Christodoulides revealed efforts to bring in Emirati companies as key players.
This is in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus, and participation
in energy infrastructure in accordance with Nicosia’s national strategy.
Cyprus and the IMEC Economic Corridor
The Cypriot president confirmed that his country is working with Israel,
the United States and the UAE to activate the International Economic Corridor (IMEC).
Which connects India to the Middle East and Europe via Nicosia.
Christodoulides announced a new influx of American investments in the technology sector,
which will be announced in the first half of January 2026.
He also noted that Nicosia’s presidency of the Council of the European Union next April
will see the announcement of specific projects.
This is funded by the European Union for countries in the region (including Lebanon),
as part of the Mediterranean region projects package and the IMEC initiative.
