London, Britain – British Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood presented the outlines of her comprehensive plan to reform the asylum system in the United Kingdom,
during a live presentation broadcast by the BBC.
This is a move aimed at speeding up procedures and tightening border controls,
amid political division over the future of the immigration issue.
According to the BBC, Mahmoud asserted that the current system is “unsustainable”.
She noted that the new reforms will include expediting the processing of
asylum applications through more organized legal mechanisms.
Expanding the capacity of reception centers, along with strict measures
to limit the entry of migrants through irregular routes.
Shabana stressed the government’s commitment to international law and human rights.
But at the same time, she stressed that London would act “firmly”
to prevent what she described as the misuse of asylum procedures.
This includes deporting those whose applications are rejected to
their countries of origin or alternative safe countries.
Heated discussions
The BBC notes that the plan also includes strengthening cooperation with EU countries.
To combat human trafficking networks and control maritime borders,
This is especially true given the rise in irregular crossings
across the English Channel during the past year.
The plan is expected to spark heated debates within the British Parliament.
This comes amid criticism from human rights organizations that say the new
measures could increase the suffering of the most vulnerable asylum seekers.
In contrast, the government believes that these reforms are necessary to restore “order and discipline” to the immigration file.
