Washington, DC – US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday significant developments in the effort to end the conflict with Tehran. He confirmed that an agreement had been reached to completely halt uranium enrichment in Iran. Trump indicated that the two sides had already agreed on many of the 15 points proposed to bring a final end to the war that erupted last February. He described the current phase as “a very positive change in the Iranian regime.”
Removing “nuclear dust” and easing restrictions
In remarks carried by Reuters, Trump said the United States and Iran would work together to “dig up and remove all the nuclear dust buried deep inside.” He was referring to dismantling Iran’s controversial nuclear program.
The US president added that Washington would begin a new chapter of close cooperation with Tehran. This includes discussions on easing tariffs and lifting economic sanctions. This comes as part of an incentive package aimed at reintegrating Iran into the international community.
A strongly worded warning to suppliers
In a parallel development, Trump’s speech was not without threats to protect the gains of the truce. He announced an immediate 50% tariff on all goods sold to the United States from any country that supplies Iran with military weapons.
Trump emphasized that this decision was effective immediately and that these sanctions would not include any exceptions or exemptions for any international party.
These statements come just two days before the Islamabad talks scheduled for next Friday. They reflect Trump’s strategy of linking major economic concessions to complete nuclear disarmament, along with strict controls on the flow of conventional weapons. Observers believe this announcement represents a cornerstone of a “comprehensive deal” aimed at transforming the region. However, this is contingent upon Tehran’s adherence to the agreed-upon technical and security provisions under direct international supervision.
