Baghdad, Iraq – The Iraqi parliament elected Nizar Mohammed Saeed Amidi, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan’s (PUK) political bureau candidate, as the new president of Iraq on Saturday, ushering in a new era of political activity in the country. Amidi is known for his extensive experience in government administration, domestic and foreign policy, and international affairs.
Origins and Education
Nizar Amidi was born in the Amadiya district of Dohuk Governorate, received his education in Mosul, and later lived and worked in both Sulaymaniyah and Baghdad, which gave him a deep understanding of the geographical and political diversity in Iraq.
Professional experience
Amidi has over 20 years of experience in government and politics, having held several executive and advisory positions, most notably:
Iraqi Minister of Environment in the government of Mohammed Shia al-Sudani from December 3, 2022, until his resignation at the end of October 2024.
Director of the Office of the President of the Republic during the presidencies of Fuad Masoum, Barham Salih, and for a short time during the presidency of Abdul Latif Rashid.
Senior Advisor to the Presidency of the Republic with the rank of Minister and Undersecretary (2005–2022).
International activity
Amidi represented Iraq at several prominent international forums, including:
Arab Summits in Egypt, Algeria, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait.
The United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP21) in Paris in 2015.
Heading the Iraqi delegation to COP28 in the UAE in 2023.
The United Nations Environment Assembly meetings in Nairobi in 2023.
The United Nations Water Conference in New York.
Political and organizational journey
Amidi has a long organizational career within the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK), having held several positions, including:
Member of the Leadership Council and current member of the PUK Political Bureau since 2023.
Head of the PUK Political Bureau in Baghdad since 2024.
He worked in the office of the PUK Secretary-General between 1993 and 2003.
Future vision
With his election as President of Iraq, Amidi is expected to continue his role in promoting national unity, supporting state institutions, and working to push Iraq towards political and social stability, while benefiting from his long experience in government and diplomatic affairs.
