Washington, DC – US Vice President J.D. Vance confirmed that President Donald Trump has given clear instructions to the US negotiating team to “go and work in good faith” during the upcoming talks with Iran in Pakistan this Friday.
Vance explained in a press statement that the US administration is seeking to capitalize on this diplomatic opportunity and aims to reach an agreement that ends the escalating conflict in the region.
The foundations of the “fragile truce”
Vance noted that the United States and its allies had committed to halting attacks on Iran. He considered this commitment the cornerstone of what he termed a “fragile truce.” The Vice President revealed that the initial agreement following Trump’s announcement of a two-week ceasefire included Iranian approval to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to international shipping. This is considered a vital step toward calming global energy markets and securing maritime trade.
Warning to Tehran’s “wings”
In a firm tone, Vance issued a direct warning to Tehran, saying, “If the Iranians do not act in good faith, they will discover that President Trump is not one to back down.”
He also noted differing opinions within Iran, stating, “Some people inside Iran have responded very positively to the truce, while others are lying about what has been achieved,” clearly indicating the presence of factions that might try to obstruct the diplomatic process.
Pezeshkian confirms participation
On the diplomatic front, the office of Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced in an official statement Wednesday that Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian had confirmed his country’s participation in the Islamabad negotiations.
This anticipated meeting aims to establish a practical framework for ending the direct conflict between Washington and Tehran. It also seeks to resolve the security issues that have fueled the confrontation since last February. Observers believe that Vance’s statements reflect the “carrot and stick” strategy employed by the Trump administration; while opening the door to a comprehensive political settlement through Pakistani mediation, it also hints at a decisive military response should the violations on the ground continue. This is particularly noteworthy following reports of attacks targeting vital installations in Gulf states this morning.
