Riyadh, Saudi Arabia – In a new military escalation reflecting Tehran’s determination to destabilize the region, Saudi air defenses announced on Tuesday that they had intercepted and destroyed drones and a ballistic missile targeting various areas of the Kingdom. This comes as Iranian attacks on Gulf states enter their tenth day.
Simultaneous attacks on Al-Kharj and the Eastern Province were thwarted
The official spokesperson for the Ministry of Defense, Major General Turki al-Maliki, stated that air defense forces intercepted and destroyed a drone east of Al-Kharj Governorate (southeast of Riyadh). This was not the only such attempt. Al-Maliki had previously announced the successful interception and destruction of two drones in the Eastern Province. He also mentioned the destruction of two additional drones east of Al-Kharj, as well as the interception of a ballistic missile launched towards the Eastern Province. Meanwhile, civil defense teams responded to the aftermath of a drone crash in a residential area in Al-Zulfi Governorate in central Saudi Arabia. The civil defense spokesperson explained that the incident resulted in limited material damage to the site. No injuries were reported.
Saudi Arabia’s unequivocal condemnation
For its part, the Saudi Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a strongly worded statement condemning the Iranian attacks, which it described as “heinous.” The statement affirmed that these attacks, targeting the Kingdom, the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, and several other Arab and Islamic nations, “cannot be accepted or justified under any circumstances.” The statement also emphasized that the continued targeting of civilian infrastructure, airports, and oil facilities constitutes a blatant violation of international conventions and international law. This reflects a persistent intent to threaten regional security and peace. The Kingdom affirmed in its statement that it “reserves its full right to take all measures necessary to protect its security, sovereignty, and the safety of its citizens and residents, and to deter any aggression.”
Division in Tehran and escalation on the ground
Observers believe that the timing and intensity of these Iranian attacks on Gulf states reflect the deep divisions within Tehran’s decision-making circles. This is especially true after the Iranian president announced policies that may not align with the military escalation led by the Revolutionary Guard. These attacks come at a time of increasing international pressure on Iran to cease its hostile actions targeting global energy lifelines and international shipping lanes. Saudi Arabia, supported by broad Arab and international solidarity, stands on the front lines against these threats. Saudi Arabia relies on the readiness of its armed forces and the development of its defense systems. These forces have demonstrated high efficiency in neutralizing the threat of drones and ballistic missiles before they can reach their destructive targets.
