Washington, DC – The White House announced that First Lady Melania Trump will chair a meeting of the United Nations Security Council on Monday. This comes as the United States assumes the rotating presidency of the Council this month.
A statement from the First Lady’s office explained that the meeting will focus on education as a tool for promoting tolerance and strengthening global peace. This marks the first time a US First Lady has chaired a Security Council session while her husband holds the presidency.
American rotating presidency of the council
The UN Security Council has 15 members, and its presidency rotates monthly among the member states. The upcoming session comes at a time when the United States holds this position.
Trump’s previous stances on the United Nations
US President Donald Trump is known for his frequent criticism of the United Nations, arguing that it needs fundamental reforms to enhance its effectiveness.
However, he recently adopted a more conciliatory tone during the inaugural meeting of the so-called “Peace Council.” This initiative is an attempt, he said, to address conflicts globally. In contrast, several international leaders expressed reservations about it, amid concerns that it could become an alternative to the role of the United Nations.
Trump has previously stated that his country will work to “strengthen the United Nations” and ensure it receives the necessary financial support. He also stressed the need for the international organization to “operate properly.”
