Sydney, Australia – The Australia government, through its official travel updates website Smartraveller, issued a high-risk security alert for its citizens in Iran, urging them to leave “as soon as possible” while commercial flights are still available. This comes amid unprecedented regional tensions looming in the Middle East.
Situation assessment: “Risk of military conflict”
The Australian Foreign Ministry explained in its statement that the region is experiencing a state of extreme instability.
The statement emphasized the real risk of military conflict
that could lead to widespread disruptions to regional and global travel.
The report warned that recently imposed airspace restrictions could escalate rapidly,
potentially resulting in flight suspensions without warning.
The Australia government described the security situation inside Iran as “highly volatile.” The risks of protests and arbitrary arrests persist.
Recommendations for citizens: Prepare for a “siege scenario”
Australian authorities have issued dramatic advice to citizens who may decide to stay or are unable to leave.
They urged them to prepare for an extended stay in a safe location and to stock up on sufficient water, food, and medicine.
Dual nationals were specifically warned of a “significant risk of arrest” or detention without clear cause.
Citizens were advised to avoid public gatherings and protest sites to ensure their personal safety.
Australia consular services paralyzed
Reflecting the seriousness of the concerns, the statement confirmed the suspension of operations at the Australian Embassy in Iran.
As a result, the government’s ability to provide consular assistance to its citizens in emergencies is now “very limited.”
“We continue to advise against all travel to Iran, and those already there should leave immediately while it is safe to do so.”
