Washington, DC – The Associated Press, citing informed sources, reported that the US Justice Department has issued new subpoenas seeking information related to critics of President Donald Trump. This action is part of a broader review of how US officials handled allegations of Russian interference in the 2016 election.
Details of new orders
According to reports, the subpoenas focus on documents and correspondence released after January 2017. That year, the world witnessed the release of the controversial intelligence report on Russian interference. The current investigation aims to understand the motives and mechanisms used in pursuing those allegations.
The Mueller investigation lasted for more than two years. Despite this, the investigation concluded without evidence of direct collusion between the Trump campaign and Moscow. However, Russian individuals were indicted.
The John Durham Report (May 2023) dealt a significant blow to the previous narrative. It also confirmed that the intelligence community lacked “real evidence” to warrant a full investigation. Furthermore, it described the FBI’s use of unverified information as “inappropriate.”
Escalation from the National Intelligence Service
In a related development, statements by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard emerged, asserting that she possesses sufficient evidence to indict those involved in what she termed a “conspiracy” against Trump.
These actions reinforce the president’s accusations that his predecessors in the previous administration attempted to undermine his authority through “falsification” and the politicization of security agencies.
Those targeted include figures who were active in opposing Trump. They also include officials involved in drafting the 2017 reports. Finally, it includes the legitimacy of using raw, unanalyzed information to level politically motivated charges.
This move follows a series of reports that questioned the integrity of the FBI’s investigation into the Trump campaign.
