Baghdad, Iraq – Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani called on the international community to expedite the repatriation of their citizens who are members of ISIS currently detained in Iraqi prisons. He warned that their continued detention poses a significant security and humanitarian challenge, given the increasing pressure on the country’s security and logistical institutions.
Al-Sudani emphasized that Iraq has borne a heavy burden on behalf of the international community in the fight against terrorism. He noted that thousands of foreign fighters remain detained in correctional facilities and detention centers. This necessitates urgent international action to repatriate them to their countries of origin and prosecute them according to each country’s national laws.
He explained that the prolonged detention of these prisoners in Iraq exacerbates security challenges, especially as the organization attempts to regroup and exploit any vulnerabilities. This requires broader international cooperation in the areas of intelligence sharing, judicial support, and logistical assistance.
The Iraqi Prime Minister pointed out that his country has achieved significant victories against ISIS in recent years. However, it still faces remaining threats, particularly in remote areas. He stressed that combating terrorism is a collective responsibility requiring the active participation of all concerned countries.
This statement comes at a time of escalating warnings about the increasing activity of ISIS sleeper cells in some areas of Iraq and Syria. There are concerns about potential escapes or the exploitation of regional chaos to revitalize the organization. This reality reinforces calls for expediting legal and diplomatic solutions to the issue of foreign fighters.
