Khartoum, Sudan -The Sudanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the Sudanese government has decided to resume its full participation in the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD). This move reflects a significant shift in relations with the regional organization after a period of tension and disagreements over political and security issues.
The Ministry explained that the decision stems from Khartoum’s commitment to strengthening joint regional action. It also aims to support efforts to achieve stability and peace in the Horn of Africa. Furthermore, it seeks to restore channels of dialogue and coordination with member states on issues of common interest, particularly those related to regional security and crisis management.
This step is seen as an indication of Sudan’s desire to revitalize its diplomatic presence within regional organizations. Khartoum also seeks to leverage IGAD’s role as a political platform to bridge differences and support initiatives aimed at ending conflicts, while simultaneously promoting economic cooperation and sustainable development among the countries of the region.
Observers believe that the resumption of Sudanese participation could pave the way for new diplomatic initiatives, especially given the challenges facing the Horn of Africa and the shifting regional balance of power. Therefore, it may grant Khartoum greater room for political maneuvering and allow it to regain its role in shaping regional arrangements in the coming period.
