Tripoli, Libya – The head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohammed al-Manfi, called on all political forces in the country to wait for the results of the official investigations underway into the killing of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, stressing the need to deal with the incident with a high sense of national responsibility.
In an official statement, Al-Manfi said he would closely monitor the investigation to ensure that no one escapes punishment, noting the importance of revealing the circumstances of the incident with full transparency, which would enhance public confidence in state institutions and spare the country negative repercussions on the political and security path.
Gaddafi’s assassination and a state of anxiety
The President of the Presidential Council expressed his understanding of the anxiety surrounding the assassination, and welcomed the use of technical support and specialized expertise within the legal frameworks, in order to expedite the investigations and ensure their integrity and the clarity of their results.
He also stressed the importance of maintaining social peace and not being drawn into reactions that might exploit the incident to fuel tensions.
Al-Manfi offered his condolences to the family of Saif al-Islam Gaddafi and his relatives, and to the Gaddafi tribe, calling on political, media and social forces to control public discourse and reject incitement.
He stressed that the aim of the assassination was to undermine national reconciliation efforts and obstruct the path towards holding free and fair elections in which the Libyan people would choose their leadership.
Libyan blood is sacred
He stressed that Libya cannot be governed by violence, nor built by fear and extrajudicial killings, emphasizing that Libyan blood is sacred and cannot be tampered with under any pretext.
In the same context, the Libyan Public Prosecution announced that it had begun investigating the incident, as the Attorney General’s office explained that a team of investigators, including forensic doctors, weapons and fingerprint experts, had gone to the city of Zintan to examine the scene of the incident and inspect the body.
The statement indicated that initial examinations revealed that Saif al-Islam had suffered gunshot wounds, stressing that the investigation aims to gather evidence, identify the circle of suspects, and take the necessary legal measures to file a public lawsuit against those involved.
Saif al-Islam Gaddafi’s political team announced in a press statement that masked gunmen stormed his residence in the city of Zintan and turned off surveillance cameras before a clash broke out that led to his death, in an incident whose circumstances are still under investigation.
