Moscow, Iran – Russia strongly condemned the United States’ declaration of a national emergency concerning Cuba.
It considered the decision a blatant return to the “maximum pressure” policy that Havana endured for decades.
It also undermines any real opportunities for dialogue or de-escalation in the region.
Economic restrictions on Cuba
The Russian Foreign Ministry said in an official statement that the US move reflects
a recurring unilateral approach based on sanctions and political blackmail.
It also violates the principles of international law and the UN Charter.
She stressed that continuing to impose economic restrictions on Cuba
only serves to deepen the humanitarian crises and the suffering of the Cuban people.
The statement added that Washington, instead of reviewing its failed policies,
is reproducing old tools that have proven incapable of achieving their goals.
She argued that declaring a state of emergency constitutes an unjustified escalation
at a time when the world needs de-escalation and confidence-building.
She emphasized that the world does not need to open new fronts of tension at this time.
Moscow is confronting America politically
Moscow emphasized its full support for Cuba’s sovereignty and political independence.
It also called on the international community to reject what it described as the “illegal economic blockade.”
And to work to end it immediately, due to its negative effects on regional stability in Latin America.
Observers believe that the Russian stance comes in the context of the escalating political confrontation with the United States.
This reflects Moscow’s efforts to assert its presence in sensitive international issues,
at a time when the international arena is witnessing a redrawing of alliances and balances of power.
