Jakarta, Indonesia – The death toll from a violent landslide that struck a mountainous region in Indonesia has risen to 34, in a human tragedy that has shaken the country and brought back to the forefront the risks of recurring natural disasters during the rainy season.
massive mudslides
Indonesian authorities said rescue teams continued search operations amid extremely difficult conditions,
after heavy rains caused massive mudslides that swept away entire homes
and buried dozens of residents under the rubble, while a number of missing people are still being searched for.
Emergency teams confirmed that the waterlogged soil, along with the rugged terrain, is hindering rescue efforts
while hundreds of residents have been evacuated from threatened areas in anticipation of further landslides.
Indonesia: Urgent aid for those affected
For its part, the Indonesian government declared a state of emergency, deploying heavy equipment and additional teams to the accident site,
while providing urgent assistance to those affected, including temporary shelter, medical care and food.
Indonesia is one of the countries most prone to landslides and earthquakes,
due to its geographical location on the Pacific Ring of Fire,
which makes such disasters recur with every rainy season,
but its severity this time has left a deep wound in the hearts of the people.
