Brussels, Belgium – Politico reports that the European Union is holding intensive consultations regarding a new round of sanctions against Iran. There is growing concern in European capitals over recent developments related to security and human rights.
The website, citing informed European sources, says the proposals include expanding the list of individuals and entities subject to sanctions. They also propose imposing additional travel restrictions and freezing assets. Furthermore, the measures may target sectors deemed “sensitive” by Brussels.
Sources indicated that EU member states are attempting to coordinate their positions to ensure a unified stance. They emphasize that any new steps will fall within the framework of political and diplomatic pressure. However, this will occur without closing existing channels of dialogue with Tehran.
This approach comes at a time of escalating tensions between Iran and the European Union. Simultaneously, calls are growing for stricter measures. Yet, these are countered by warnings that tightening sanctions could further complicate the regional landscape and potentially have repercussions for stability in the Middle East.
