Aden, Yemen– Anwar al-Tamimi, spokesman for the Southern Transitional Council, declared that the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council no longer represents a consensus.
He described recent statements issued by the office of the council’s president, Rashad al-Alimi,
as a “full-fledged coup” against the declaration of the transfer of power.
Transitional Council and the exclusion of southerners
In a strongly worded statement issued early Tuesday, Al-Tamimi responded to an attack launched by an official source in Al-Alimi’s office.
The attack was against the Vice President of the Southern Transitional Council
and member of the Presidential Leadership Council, Major General Faraj Al-Bahsani.
This followed the latter’s interview with Agence France-Presse.
Al-Tamimi said: “What is surprising is not the principled and responsible stance taken
by Major General Faraj Al-Bahsani regarding the coup-like political
and military decisions issued by Rashad Al-Alimi. Rather, it is your insistence on excluding the southern partner.
This exclusion occurs while simultaneously talking about dialogue on the southern issue.”
dire consequences
The spokesman for the Southern Transitional Council accused the head of the Presidential Council of making unilateral decisions.
He said the leadership was systematically working to eliminate opportunities for partnership.
He warned that these policies “portend dire consequences” for the stability of state institutions
.And hadded that they also threaten the political consensus upon which the Council was founded.
Faced with this political impasse, Al-Tamimi urgently called on the “International Quartet” (comprising the United States, Britain, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates).
This group oversees the situation in Yemen. He requested their immediate intervention.
He demanded that they fulfill their obligations to ensure the implementation of the signed agreements.
His call stressed the need to prevent the collapse of the consensus.
