Berlin, Germany – The German magazine Der Spiegel has revealed that a growing number of European leaders are privately expressing their distrust of US President Donald Trump. They warn that his potential return to the White House could bring about radical changes in the US stance toward Ukraine.
According to the magazine, this concern has prompted some European leaders to offer direct advice to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. They advise him to be cautious in relying on American support and warn against basing his political and military strategy on firm assumptions about continued backing from Washington.
Der Spiegel noted that European concerns center on the possibility of reduced military and financial support for Ukraine, or its use as leverage should the priorities of the incoming US administration change. This could present Kyiv with additional challenges in managing the war and its relations with its allies.
The report added that these concerns reflect a state of uncertainty within European capitals, where leaders are seeking alternative ways to bolster European self-reliance in supporting Ukraine, in anticipation of any sudden shift in US policy in the coming period.
