Moscow, Russia – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov accused European leaders of being “literally blinded by their political ambitions,”
arguing that this approach not only harms Ukrainians but also extends to ignoring the vital interests of their own people.
Lavrov explained, in statements carried by the TASS news agency,
that the European Union has adopted narrow agendas that make the rights of European citizens a secondary priority;
This, in his view, turned the continent into the main obstacle to achieving peace in the region.
Marginalizing the European Role
In the same context, Lavrov indicated that Moscow is aware of
the European Union’s intention to prepare for a long-term conflict with Russia.
Accordingly, the Russian minister affirmed that Moscow will continue its direct cooperation
with American negotiators to formulate permanent agreements that address the root causes of the crisis;
He believes that the path to peace lies exclusively through understandings with Washington,
away from European pressures, which he described as ineffective and lacking political independence.
Escalation on the ground
Moreover, these harsh statements come at a time when the fronts in eastern Ukraine are witnessing a continuous military escalation and intensive attacks on infrastructure.
Since international initiatives, including the efforts of the United Nations, have so far failed to impose a ceasefire,
The gap between Moscow’s ambitions and the desires of Kyiv and its allies is widening;
This makes it more difficult for mediators to reach a peaceful settlement before the end of this year.
Ukraine as a “tool” in the great power struggle
On the other hand, Lavrov stressed that for Western leaders, Ukraine is merely
a “tool” in a broader geopolitical struggle aimed at exhausting Russia.
As the conflict approaches its fourth year, it has become clear that the rift
between Moscow and Brussels has gone beyond border disputes.
This leads to a conflict over the shape of the new international order;
This raises fundamental questions about the ability of current Western
mediation efforts to achieve any real breakthrough in this crisis-ridden path.
Summary of the Russian position
Lavrov’s speech reflects a Russian strategy aimed at isolating the European role
and focusing on dialogue with the American “original”.
Therefore, the situation remains open to all possibilities,
which makes the coming days crucial in determining the fate of the proposed initiatives.
This ensures either a transition to direct negotiations or a continuation
of mutual military attrition with no end in sight.
