Cairo, Egypt – The Arab Republic of Egypt strongly condemned Israel’s unilateral recognition of the so-called “Somaliland.” It affirmed that this move constitutes a flagrant violation of the principles of international law and the Charter of the United Nations. Furthermore, it represents a direct threat to the unity and territorial integrity of states, in addition to its negative repercussions on security and stability in the Horn of Africa region.
This came in an official statement issued by the Egyptian Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Friday. In it, Cairo stressed its categorical rejection of any unilateral actions or moves that would undermine the sovereignty of states or encourage secession through illegitimate means.
Egypt’s firm stance: No recognition of separatist entities
Egypt affirmed in its statement that it completely rejects the recognition of any parallel or separatist entities imposed outside the framework of international law. It stressed that Israel’s actions constitute a serious transgression of international norms and a direct violation of the principle of respecting the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry clarified that the unilateral recognition of the so-called “Somaliland” has no legal basis. It also clearly contradicts UN resolutions and the position of the international community, which recognizes the Republic of Somalia as a unified and sovereign state.
Full support for the unity and territorial integrity of Somalia
Egypt reaffirmed its full support for the unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of Somalia. It asserted that any separatist efforts would destabilize one of the world’s most geopolitically sensitive regions.
The statement emphasized that Cairo views preserving Somalia’s unity as essential for achieving regional security in the Horn of Africa. This prevents the spread of chaos and armed conflicts that could spill over into neighboring countries and vital maritime routes.
Warning of serious regional repercussions
Egypt warned that such unilateral steps undermine the foundations of international peace and security. Moreover, they open the door to further tensions and conflicts in the Horn of Africa, a region already facing complex security and political challenges.
She emphasized that encouraging or providing political cover for separatist movements would create dangerous precedents. These threaten the stability of states, undermine development and reconstruction efforts, and negatively impact international navigation and Red Sea security.
Egypt’s firm commitment to international law
The statement emphasized that Egypt’s position stems from its unwavering commitment to the principles of international law and the UN Charter. It categorically rejects any attempts to impose a fait accompli or alter political maps through unilateral actions.
Cairo affirmed its commitment to continuing coordination with regional and international partners to support stability in Somalia. It also pledged to promote political solutions that respect the sovereignty and unity of states and fulfill the aspirations of the region’s people for security and peace.
Cairo: Stability can only be achieved through international legitimacy.
Egypt concluded its statement by emphasizing that the only path to achieving lasting stability in the Horn of Africa lies in respecting international law and supporting nation-states. In closing, it rejected policies of imposing a fait accompli, stressing that any other course of action would only lead to further turmoil and instability.
