Istanbul, Turkey – A high-level delegation from Hamas, headed by Dr. Khalil al-Hayya, held an important meeting today, Saturday, in Istanbul with the head of Turkish intelligence, Ibrahim Kalin. The meeting focused primarily on overcoming obstacles to the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Discussions also addressed ensuring a smooth transition between the agreement’s phases.
Key topics of the meeting
Commitment to the first phase: Hamas stressed the necessity of obligating Israel to fully implement its commitments related to the first phase. This condition is fundamental and non-negotiable for moving to the second phase of the understanding process.
Monitoring violations: The movement’s delegation reviewed the repeated Israeli violations since the agreement came into effect. They also noted that these violations have resulted in the deaths of more than 400 martyrs. This jeopardizes the continuation of the ceasefire.
The humanitarian crisis and winter: The delegation warned of a worsening humanitarian situation with the onset of winter. They also stressed the “utmost priority” of bringing in tents, caravans, and heavy equipment to protect citizens from the cold and floods, given the destruction of infrastructure.
The Turkish position and national unity
The two sides discussed the role Ankara could play in creating the necessary conditions for addressing outstanding issues.
The meeting also emphasized strengthening Palestinian unity and upholding national principles. They noted the importance of intensifying international efforts to deliver medical and humanitarian aid to all areas of the Gaza Strip without exception, in addition to supporting the political process leading to the establishment of an independent Palestinian state.
The movement’s statement: “We appreciate the efforts made by the Republic of Turkey in supporting the rights of the Palestinian people, and we value the supportive positions of the Turkish leadership and its ongoing relief efforts.”
